The traditional grape stomp consists of teams of two people, a barefoot stomper and a swabby (helper).  They compete to see how much juice they can extract in three minutes from 25 pounds of grapes in a wine barrel. This is an extremely popular event with unlimited photographic potential.

     To facilitate teambuilding, the grape stomp is combined with a relay and allows each team member to be both a stomper and a swabby.  Up to six teams can compete at one time: multiple heats will involve and accommodate large groups of participants.  The total time from start to finish runs 60-90 minutes. 

     Our grape stomp utilizes authentic wine barrels as well as real wine grapes fresh from the vineyard.

The wine country staff also provides back ground information about our beautiful wine region, the grapes themselves, and the history of grape stomping and wine making.

What happens?

What to wear:

Pretty much anything goes that covers pertinent body parts! Stomping is serious business yet we recommend casual clothing for this venue.  All grape juice is clear so any contact with the grapes  won’t stain your clothing however we recommend not wearing your best silk blouse or shirt. 

Off the wall:

What If I don’t want to swab and/or stomp?

Because of the relay style, those wishing not to stomp and/or swab still are included in the fun.  Plus, there is no shame in being the team cheerleader and participating in the non –physical part of the event.

What size groups do you accommodate?

We can accommodate any size group from 8 stompers to over 200+   With larger groups we have separate heats and then a final “Stomp Off” to determine the overall winner.

Everyone is a winner at the stomp and each participant receives a custom designed grape stomp pin as a momento of their time in or out of the barrel.  Winning teams receive custom wine awards and special prizes go to those exhibiting unique talent in the barrel, exceptional teamwork or other special talents!
